This morning we visited a Johnson & Johnson facility on the far outskirts of Shanghai. The facility provides training for Chinese physicians on how to use Johnson & Johnson technologies that have been purchased by the physicians' state-run hospitals. Such after-sales service and training is an important selling aspect in the rapidly-growing Chinese health care market (average annual growth of about 20% over the last 5 years, even faster than the 10% annual growth in China's GDP). The facility includes a couple of classrooms, but also an in-depth simulated surgery lab. A similar facility exists in Beijing, symbolizing the tremendous potential profit in the Chinese market for global health care companies.

After a great lunch at a restaurant near the back gate of the ECNU campus (which cost under $5 per person (36 yuan) for 11 dishes and 6 liters of Coke), we had a two-hour lecture on Chinese culture, particularly China's control and censorship of all newspaper and television media.
Tonight we are meeting up with local students in "The New World," a brand new portion of downtown Shanghai with many international, high-end restaurants. There we will have snacks on a boat tour of the Huangpu River while we get to know the ECNU students.
